Today I leave you with a link to Dan Savage’s sex advice column, Savage Love. One of the things Savage Love provides me with, next to an entertaining read about all the weird things people do in name of sex and the occasional nugget of sex-advice wisdom, is an overview of American politics. At least, the politics that have to do with sexuality – whether it be straight, gay, or something in between (or beyond…).

This week’s column dealt with yet another conservative figure-head getting caught in skanky sex. Remember Jimmy Swaggart? Larry Craig? Ted Haggard? Rod Jetton? Apparently, now we can add George Rekers to this list. The list is long enough these days that, as Savage says in an earlier column:

Here’s hoping that all straight folks everywhere one day realize that anti-gay ravers come in just two flavors: assholes who are externalizing their own internal struggles against homosexual desires (Ted Haggard, Larry Craig, Charlie Crist, Joseph Ratzinger, et al.) and assholes who are attempting to compensate for and/or draw attention away from their own moral shortcomings (David Vitter, Mark Sanford, John Ensign, Vic Toews, et al.).

I’d laugh at this if it wasn’t so heartbreaking to see all this angst and anxiety being played out in the public arena.
