{insert song lyrics about New York here}

My dad, my sister and I are spending a week in New York, starting Monday. (Though we all fly out at ten o’clock, we’re not on the same plane, by the way: my dad’s trip is technically business-related so he’s taking a direct one to Newark, while Anneke and I are travelling through Houston because we’re flying on his frequent flyer miles and when you fly for free, you don’t complain. At least I don’t. This does mean, for the geographically challenged of you, that our route looks something like this:

thank you Google maps

So that should be fun.)

I am very excited, even if I haven’t starting planning an itinerary at all yet. That’s what those 14 hours on the plane are for, right?  Expect pictures when I get back!

    Well… the actual flight path might be closer to what’s shown on this map: http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=ams-iahiah-ewr&PM=b%3Adisc7%2B%25N&MS=bm&MP=r&PW=2&DU=mi&E=60&E=120 . So if your plane is allowed to take the shortest route over land, you might even see the Great Lakes and the Niagara Falls. (The lighter circles in the Atlantic Ocean show where the closest airport is 60 or 120 minutes away – for the “unlikely event” that you need to make an emergency landing.)

    Thanks for the elaborate comment! I wasn’t thinking in specific flight paths but in semi-straight lines, as you can see 🙂 but it’s good to know what I could be seeing if I had a window seat. Now I know what I can see other people see from my aisle seat 🙂

    my favorite:

    Even if it ain’t all it seems, I got a pocketful of dreams
    Baby, I’m from New York
    Concrete jungle where dreams are made of
    There’s nothing you can’t do
    Now you’re in New York
    These streets will make you feel brand new
    Big lights will inspire you
    Hear it for New York, New York, New York!
